The production of copper has been around for well over 10,000 years with ancient people using it to make jewelry as well as tools. Copper is a soft metal and shaping it into tools and attractive pieces of art makes it a sought after element to work with. The word copper is derived from the Greek island of Kúpros which is synonymous with copper.
Prevent oxidation (tarnishing) of your copper jewelry by storing it in plastic bags with a silicone packet. The silicone will absorb moisture in the air. The moisture is what causes your copper to oxidize. If you prefer the look of oxidation which can turn your copper green or a rich dark brown, then leave it exposed to air.
If copper turns your skin green or black, there is an easy solution to prevent this. Seal the back of the copper jewelry with clear fingernail polish. Over time, the polish will wear off and when you notice your skin turning green or black again, just seal it again.
